Alle porte o addirittura dentro la Ville Lumière, al massimo a 15 chilometri dalla basilica di Notre Dame, ma sociologicamente lontani quanto la luna dall’opulenza della Place Vendome, dei tessuti preziosi della capitale della moda e degli stucchi d’orati del palazzo dell’Eliseo." Paris is trying to deal with the issue of homelessness. Between December 2006 and January 2007, the problem gained worldwide attention. Presidential elections are scheduled for April 2007, and both Chirac's main opponents, Segolene Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy promise forthcoming solutions. In the past few month homeless people were everywhere in Paris, under the bridges, on traffic islands, in the parks, in abandoned areas. In the suburbs as well as in the city centre, sleeping in tents, gazebos, or directly in sleeping bags under the stars. The French Government estimates they are 86,500 in all the country. They come from abroad but more and more often they are French citizen who cannot afford the high cost of living in the Ville Lumiere.
